ANIMATIOOON

I have been messing with Pencil for a while now, but have been reluctant to really invest a lot of time in it, as previous efforts with sound and exporting clips have ended glitchily. Today I randomly tried to export something I made a while ago, and it worked! It's only one second long, but it is exciting nonetheless. Here is a link.

squirgle dirgle dumpkins

some eyes
some Jarmuschs
A little sketch of a guy fishing
A sciencey gun
A girl in a skirt and sweater
I have long known about Clint Eastwood's squint, which I pathetically try to recreate on any day with enough sun. I have recently discovered Sergio Leone, but have yet to attempt to recreate him.

Sketchings of late

Back to school! Which means less laptop time but more sketchbook time. Here are a few things I drew the other day.

more monster work

Been messin round with this monster too long
Gotta get me a new monster
One that don't treat me so bad
Drinkin whiskey under the porch
Oh lawwwd
Got the monster drawin' blues
(not really though it's actually a lot of fun)
This is my first real attempt at blending values in photoshop, which I suppose makes it my second attempt ever? It's a bit easier in photoshop than it was with acrylics, which was a lot of trial and error. However, since I keep changing the anatomy/realizing the values aren't really established well to begin with, I have to revise a lot. Still a work in progress, but I like the binocular eyes he's grown.

friday it is not but i'm taking friday off so that's even better... THURSDAY!

I have been watching FZDSCHOOL's channel on youtube and picking up some tips on composition. I decided to try to make a concept art type drawing. Here's how the initial stages are going.
Original sketch
monster redrawn a bit
and what I have so far

There are still a lot of things to add and change but I think it's coming along alright. I still have a lot to learn about lighting, perspective... well drawing in general. But hopefully this will help me learn things.

robot and friend

Trying to teach myself about perspective. All the explanations have these random cubes in them so I figured it'd be more fun to arrange them into a robot.

sketchbook favorites

I was looking through a sketchbook I finished (well it basically got too beat up to carry around, although I didn't actually fill all the pages) and decided to post some of my favorite things from it. There were a fair amount and this ended up taking longer than I thought it would so I will just post one page thing's worth for now.

I made a poster thing for a show we're having omg

Here it is. I am the drummer, fully ready to rock-pounce.
A-Kaiwa and the Juku Boys may need some explaining. So: eikawa is what English conversation classes are called here in Japan. The "ei" bit is pronounced like the letter A. So in traditional hip-hop boasting tradition (the band is an instrumental hip-hop band... if that's a genre? Like the Roots or RATM...) the kaiwa (conversation) has been given an A. At least I think that was what was intended. I didn't name it. The Juku Boys are we, the instrument-wielders. Juku is an after-school school where kids study a bunch more and learn the things they didn't learn while they were sleeping and/or shrieking in normal class. As we are all English teachers, the names seemed appropriate, and so it seemed appropriate to have us playing very emphatically in front of a small Japanese child sitting across a table on the poster. If only eikawa was actually this RAD!!!
Art commentary section in which I complain: I hate trying to draw straight lines or curved lines on my tablet. Crooked skriggly lines are ok though, those come out quite naturally. If only hands made skriggly crooked shapes instead of proportional nicely lined shapes. Also guitar strings. Still, I think it's a pretty sweet poster.

GLOW EYES

A monster emerging from some depths. HIS EYES ARE GLOWING!!!

Monday, May 23, 2011

This post will soon be made into a new original series and covered with pictures of the actors that portray the characters in it

I hate it when books do that.
Anyway here are a few things I've worked on lately. The first is a sketch of some dudes hunting a creature that lives in river ravines running through jungles. The dudes are kind of hard to spot and were just an afterthought to the creature, which I rather like the look of, but then I got to thinking of how they might hunt a creature like this and decided to draw one in more detail, then give him some color.
I redrew a few things but I like the way he ended up looking.
I checked out a few photoshop painting tutorials and picked up a few things after finishing that drawing. Increasing the dpi is a big one, so it doesn't look so blocky. I thought I'd try some of the techniques and things on another sketch I did. It didn't work so well as the tutorial I was looking at used a scanner to import the source material, whereas I take a picture which tends to create uneven lighting and... well to make a long story short I didn't finish it, but here's how far I got.

flurbulty flarp

I haven't had much time to draw lately as I have been stuck with translation stuff at work, but I have been messing around a little. I found a website for practicing figure drawing and capturing poses that cycles through images of a computer generated model at set intervals, so I've given that a few tries. Some of the results are below. It has made me aware of how much time passes while drawing, which is something I tend to not notice normally. I also drew a few faces and stuff.

Paints

So, after having some paints lying around for a few weeks and not knowing what to do with them and sort of being afraid of wasting them I decided to say "to heck with it," and I made a painting. Well two actually, the first one I just used a big brush and messed around. It was hard to paint details with a large brush. Here it is, a monster guy hiding in a cloud bank... he's not doing a very good job of hiding though:

Next, since Nagisa bought me the paints, I thought I'd make her a painting. She likes rabbits and strawberries, so I thought I'd combine the two somehow. Here are two sketches:

Yes, it's a rabbit character(who I had actually come up with before) riding a purple-legged giant strawberry. The strawberry is a bit unruly, and the rabbit is an inexperienced rider. Good heavens! Here's how it turned out:

Wu-Tang.

The view out my window, I took some liberties with the colors... and proportions.

sketchy poo

Here is a wee bit o sketchy poo I did tonight while sitting on my bed. A-IIIIIIIIII!
Double face of an old woman on the cover of my neighborhood newsletter, my thumb and part of the rest of my hand holding my notebook, and a mysterious woman.
